What to look for in a computer consultant

Experience: First and foremost, a computer consultant must have experience in the field. The longer your consultant has worked in the field, the better. The more diverse clients he/she has worked with, the better. The reason for this is because every business is different and a seasoned computer consultant will have more experience dealing with different scenarios. If you are looking for a computer consultant, chances are you either have a problem with an existing computer system or want to install a new computer system. Either way, there can be problems. An experienced computer consultant can save you time and money. They can get your business up and running faster than one that is just starting out.

Certifications: Although certifications do not mean that a computer consultant has experience it is a very easy way to tell that a person committed themselves to learning about a particular product. A certification also means that that person has passed the minimum requirements set forth by the industry/company to support their products. Make sure the consultant has the certification/experience to support YOUR needs.

Continuing Education: The computer industry is always changing and computer consultants have to constantly keep up with the new technologies. Make sure your computer consultant has been keeping him/herself up-to-date on the latest trends and advancements in the computer field.

Trustworthiness: Although this is a difficult trait to measure, it is definitely an important one. Your computer consultant may be working in an environment where he/she has access to your company’s critical data (accounting, client data, product schematics, etc.). You need to make sure that this person is someone you can trust. You may think that your data is secure but chances are that the computer consultant you hire will need to have administrative access to your systems and therefore will be able to get around all of your security measures.

Courteousness: If you work in an environment where customers come to your business, you want to find a computer consultant that is courteous to you and whoever is around them.

Cost: Last but not least is their cost. Most consultants work at an hourly rate. Make sure you find out what they charge before you hire them on. Also, be careful not to base a consultant’s experience on the amount they charge. High rates do not always mean better service…and low rates do not mean better bargains. Shop around and find a consultant that has a rate that is competitive with other companies. Make sure they satisfy the other criteria in this list first!
